I just bought, “The Secret Life of Words: How English Became English“. English books are expensive in Israel, but this one was on sale so I pounced on it. (Hmmm, an English book that’s also ABOUT English – shouldn’t it be MORE expensive, not less?) But in addition to the price, I’m finding out that it’s also a great read.
On the surface, it’s a book about the words we use. But on a deeper level, it’s a book about who we are. Because the words we use reflect our culture, our habits and our inner selves.
Overall, it’s a great investment, and it will probably improve your writing too – albeit in a more roundabout way than your standard writing manual.  (Shameless self-promotion – click here for my free report on how to improve your direct mail letter)
I firmly believe that an enhanced awareness of linguistics will only help your marketing skills.  After all, marketing is the communication of ideas through language.Â
So if you’re even slightly interested in learning about the language you speak daily, get your hands on a copy!
This book can also make you look good at a party. You can impress your friends with a French word you read in this book. Or you can throw out a cool fact like this one: Did you know the average American uses 500 different words a day while a British person uses about 3,700?
Read the book to find out why that’s so.
I’ll be honest. I’m only on page 43. Â Perhaps its a tad early for unconditional praises. So do take my advice with a grain of salt.
But if you do pick up a copy, or if you’ve already read it, let me know what you think.
